starting point.
The same shift, AI engines deciding which brands buyers consider, lands differently depending on what you own. Pick the starting point that matches your role; each routes to the right guides for your questions.
GEO by role · Last updated
Generative engine optimization affects every marketing role, but the anxiety is different for each. An executive asks whether it's real and how to prove it; a demand gen lead asks how to measure and report it; a content leader asks why their articles rank but aren't cited. The shift underneath is the same: 94% of B2B buyers now use AI during the buying process (6sense, 2025). What changes by role is which part of that problem you own. These six starting points meet each role where it is and point to the right resources.
The same shift, a different question by role
Decision-makers ask whether it's real and worth funding. For a CEO, CMO, or VP of Marketing, the question is legitimacy and ROI. The stakes are concrete: 95% of the vendors that win a deal were already on the buyer's Day-One shortlist (6sense, across roughly 4,000 B2B purchases), the list AI increasingly helps assemble, so a brand absent from AI answers is often cut before sales is ever involved.
The people who own the number ask how to measure and report it. For a demand gen leader, GEO has to become a trackable program, and the target moves: 40 to 60% of the domains AI cites turn over month to month (Profound), so a one-time audit goes stale fast and recurring measurement is the actual job.
The people who build the pages ask why content that ranks isn't cited. For a digital marketing or content lead, the SEO playbook doesn't carry over: organic search traffic explains only about 5% of whether a page gets cited by AI, and backlinks under 4%, across Profound's analysis of more than 50,000 prompts. The fix is structural, not more links.
